Daytime sleepiness usually occurs when a person is unable to get uninterrupted and sufficient amount of sleep during night. It the routine continues for some than a week, a person may feel excessive urge to sleep during the day. Dozing in the late mornings can interfere with ability to work. The person may become moody and irritated. Hypersonic or recurrent sleepiness is also found in individuals who are unable to get adequate sleep during night. In some cases, this condition can occur as a result of fatigue or illnesses.

In some cases, this situation can be caused by extreme stress, anxiety or mental disorders. Extensive treatment is necessary as the condition can affect cognitive functions.

Ways to deal with daytime sleeping:-

Getting adequate nighttime sleep:- Getting adequate nighttime sleep is extremely crucial as it can be the chief causal factor. Individuals should make sure they are getting seven to nine hours of interrupted sleep. It is not advisable to allocate sleeping time to other activities. If schedule is too hectic to allow proper sleeping; individuals should make some changes in them. Unwanted tasks should be eliminated. Some nighttime tasks should be shifted to morning tasks.Consistency in sleeping time:- It is advisable not to sleep till the body gives such signals. Differentiate between being sleepy and being tired. Late afternoon napping should be avoided. Going to sleep and waking up at the definite time helps to avoid sudden pangs in mornings. If it is not possible, setting the time to go to bed will also help. It will set proper sleeping rhythm. Gradually moving to earlier bedtime also helps many individuals.Regular mealtime:-Eating regular breakfast and meals are good approaches to deal with excessive sleepiness. It helps to establish circadian rhythms. Regular intake of food protects body from energy deficits which may further aggravate the sleeping problem. Try to finish meals two to three hours before the mealtime. It will aid the digestion and facilitate good sleep.Regular exercising: - Regular exercising has several benefits for a good sleep. Exercising especially aerobic exercises at least 30 minutes a day gives more daytime energy and protects from uneven naps. Exposure to sunlight is greatly useful to maintain sleep patterns.Avoiding nightcaps: - Beverages like alcohol and coffee stimulate the brain and prevent sleep. They should not be taken at least two to three hours before sleeping.Relaxation activities: - Relaxation activities like meditation, listening to soothing music, taking baths, drinking warm milk can be pursued to facilitate early sleeping.Freedom form electronic gadgets: - As long as possible, keep you electronic gadgets like computers, laptops, cell phones, TVs away from bedroom. They are responsible for distracting sleep.Consulting a sleep specialist:-If daytime sleepiness persists despite a good night's sleep it is possible that a person is suffering from narcolepsy, apnea or some sleep related disorder. These disorders may be responsible for sudden sleeping pangs.
