The Acupuncture Needle and Its Size

In modern day acupuncture there are different types of needles used for different types of acupuncture. Also, there are silver heads, the gold heads and stainless steel. The stainless steel needle are mostly manufactured as single use only, the common sizes used by therapists are the 40 gauge, the 38 gauge and the 44 gauge the acupuncture needle can be 25mm long or 3 mm to 4 inches long. For treatment of the surface of the skin the most used is either gold or silver. This is called a blunt needle. For prepubescent treatment in children one might prefer to use the Japanese tools which are also referred to as the children's needle. These Japanese tools are known as the shonishin and they are not inserted into the body but massaged to stimulate the skin meridians. The tools used for the various acupuncture can be silver, gold, and stainless steel and copper they can be cleaned sterilized and reused.

HOW TO INSERT THE ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLE?

It is inserted depending on the nature of the acu point, the symptoms of the patient and location of the part in the body. Also, the technique of the insertion of the needle matters. This might be inserted and deep as 1 inch or more for parts such as the buttocks while for shallow parts of the body, this can be inserted as shallow as 1/8 of an inch. The insertion of this might be felt as the needle is going in through the various layers of the needle. One this is inserted to the required point by the therapist then one can flick or peck the needle. This might cause a warmth sensation, numbness or even mild tingling. This can only be allowed to stay in the body for 10 minutes to 20 minutes as the patient is in a relaxing mood and do not be surprised as patients falls asleep on the massage table.

THE SHONISHIN NEEDLE:

This is used to treat some conditions in children meaning that acupuncture is recommended even for children. These tools give a light treatment to children and yet effective with its treatment. It treats symptoms such as:

Diarrhea, indigestion and constipation.Temper tantrums, night terrors or crying at night.The ADHD in children (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).Hives, eczema, stuttering and bedwetting.Infections in the ear, colds, allergies and asthma.

The smaller the number of the gauge of acupuncture needle the bigger the needle. An average acupuncture needle used for treatment is 1 inch long and 32 gauge though this might vary from one therapist to another. This is not hollow.
